anshun

It was my first time in Guizhou province. I was invited by China Press to photograph the city of Anshun — part of their tourism promo drive.

I knew Guizhou was famous for its food and minority cultures. Their both true, but it’s more than I initially expected.

Here’s a map of where Guizhou is located

Nuo Opera Performers

The opening ceremony had Nuo opera performers backstage preparing for their stage time and we were warmly invited to photograph them. I'm not gonna lie...that backstage access changed the trip for me.

When the ceremony starts, these same people become something else entirely.

ethnic dance performers

Alongside the Nuo performers were ethnic dance performers making their preparations and being playful. I was totally captivated by their spirited nature and vibrant color designs of their outfits.

ethnic Miao villagers

We were also very honored the be invited to one of the last yet-to-be developed ethnic Miao villages down the river from Anshun.

There are already signs of development - tourist friendly signs and public restrooms, but most of it still looks pretty original.

I have to say, very very grateful to the local villagers to put up a show for us under the scorching hot sun. It’s mostly likely a job for them, but still totally respect the spirit.
